Before

Take ‘Christmas Clutter’ (like cards and stockings) and use it as stylish décor for your home. Follow these steps from The Stump Shop to build a simple and rustic Christmas Tree Card Holder.

Step 1: Cut your wood to size.

  • Cut the 2x4 to a pointy tip on one end.
  • Cut the 1x4 to the following sizes:
    • 1 – 30”
    • 1 – 25”
    • 1 – 20”
    • 1 – 15”
    • 1 – 10”
    • 1 – 5”

Optional: Use a 25-degree angle on both ends of each piece from the 1x4 board.

Step 2: Stain the 2x4 with the Varathane Premium Wood Stain in Dark Walnut and stain the 1x4s with the Varathane Ultimate Wood Stain in Linen White Stain. Wait for the stain to dry.

Step 3: Arrange the 1x4 wood pieces across the 2x4 wood piece at 3” intervals. Place the largest piece at the bottom, gradually working towards the smallest piece on top. Use three 2” screws to secure each piece to the 2x4.

Pro tip: Secure the screws from the rear to avoid visible screws.

Step 4: Attach the 10x10” board to the bottom of the tree using 2 screws from the bottom.

Step 5: Spray the entire tree with Varathane Triple Thick One Coat Clear Finish Spray. Allow to dry.

Step 6: Using your favourite Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover, spray 5-10 clothespins. Allow to dry. For this project, I used Apple Red, Hunt Club Green and Blossom White for a Christmas theme. But be creative – use any colour you want!

Step 7: Glue the clothespins to the tree in different locations to allow for a card or stocking to hang.

Optional: Decorate the tree using fake snow, string lights, ornaments or even a star on top.
